You may opt for a longer route of 8 miles or go for the chair lift and take the shorter 2.5 mile route. Thus, the starting times will depend on which route you take. More details to come. If you have questions, please ask.
SUBTEAMS:
Team CA is broken into subteams. You've probably been contacted by a team leader from one of our roughly 10 or so subteams. You may choose which team you'd like to hike with.
DETAILS:
A group of big-hearted, high-energy Heart for Africa volunteers have designed a creative and exciting new way to raise funds for Project Canaan in Swaziland. It started with the idea of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, East Africa, and has grown to include climbing in Taiwan, the United States, Canada and Swaziland, with all teams summiting on June 25, 2011. Imagine people reaching to some of the highest points on earth to bring HOPE to a country filled with orphans and vulnerable children?
The team has a collective goal of raising $150,000 that will be used to support the building of phase 2 of the El Roi Baby Home, Kufundza Learning Center and the ISO Building, all located on Project Canaan in Swaziland. El Roi will be a home for babies who have been abandoned or “dumped” by desperate young mothers who cannot care for them. The Kufundza Learning Center will provide much needed training in carpentry and other skills to help increase knowledge and employment in the area. The ISO Building will allow us to properly package and export vegetables and maximize profit from the farm so that we can feed more children.
Who:
- Mt. Kilimanjaro Team – Robert Smucker
- Team Taiwan – James Liao
- Team Swaziland - Anthony Mutua
- Team Colorado – TBC
- Team Hawaii – Howard Hodel
- Team California – Wolfgang Buehler
- Team Georgia - Rick & Leigh Ann Bishop
- Team Canada - Leanne Wilkinson & Sandra Mann
When:
Each team will plan accordingly to arrive at the summit of their mountain on June 25th, the day the Kilimanjaro team will reach the summit of Kibo. Each team will have their picture taken with a Heart for Africa flag at the summit of their mountain.
Where:
- Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,340’) in Moshi Tanzania, the tallest mountain in Africa
- Mt. Jade (12,966’) the tallest mountain in Taiwan (also know as Mt. Yu)
- Mt. Hope - (3,727’) the highest point at Project Canaan
- Mt. Elbert (14,433’) in Colorado, the second tallest mountain in the lower 48
- Mt. San Antonio (Mt. Baldy) (10,068') the highest point in Los Angeles County

Heart for Africa - Summit 4 Hope Team CA
Heart for Africa is a Christian non-profit 501(c)3 public charity. Working alongside churches and children's homes in Swaziland, we are providing care and hope for a future for children in this small African nation. Through short term service trips, child sponsorship, and large fund raising programs, we are working to deliver quality care, shelter, food, water, clothing, health care, and education to the orphaned and vulnerable children of Swaziland.
In the past five years, have had had over 5,000 people travel to Africa as part of our program. These volunteers, people just like you, have taken 11 days to go to Swaziland and see for themselves the challenges of this country have made a commitment to making a change in the lives of those they have encountered. We believe that while we may not be able to save every life in Africa, that one person at a time, the people of the United States and Canada can have a serious impact on the lives of thousands in Swaziland.
COPY OF REGISTERED HIKERS EMAIL - DETAILS FOR DONATIONS AND DAY OF HIKE
Hi Summit 4 Hope Hikers,
We're excited to have you join Team CA in our hike up Mt. Baldy on June 25th!
As the day is approaching quickly (one week to go!), we have some details to cover.
Please review this letter in its entirety (I know it's long, but it's all important :)
It includes what is expected of you as a hiker in raising donations and details of the hiking day.
---GOAL---
As Team CA, we're shooting to raise $30,000. There are 3 main ways we're reaching this goal. We need your help!
- Corporate Sponsors: We have a number already which will be on the event t-shirt. We're open to additional sponsors.
- Hiking Registration Fees: Registration fees go directly towards our fundraising as well.
- Individual Hiker Support Donation (YOU): Each hiker should be requesting support from their friends, family and coworkers. Any amount is helpful.
---DONATIONS---
- Set your own goal!
- To make it simple to request donations to support your hike, visit http://summit4hope.eventbrite.com
- At the top of the page is a form to both register to hike and/or donate only. You're welcome to invite other hikers as well as request donations. If they are hiking, make sure they also register for one of the two hiking options - $35 for hike without a shirt/wristband and $50 for hike with a shirt/wristband.
- For donations only, your supporters can enter any amount in the field next to "DONATION - Support a Hiker for Any/All 3 Causes - To Donate w/o a Processing Fee, See Link Below"
- The eventbrite page does charge a fee for utilizing the system. Thus, if someone wants to go directly to the Heart for Africa page and donate, they may do so without a fee. Instructions are on the body copy of the details of the eventbrite page. Many are just donating on eventbrite as it's simple and fast and gives the ability to socially share that you've donated on your social sites such as Facebook and Twitter, thus further helping the cause. That said, I recommend using our eventbrite page as it will help us raise funds faster, especially as we're short on time.
- Be sure to click on the "Email" - "Share" - "Tweet" - and "Like" buttons at the top of this page. This is a great way for you to simply share this page with friends and family and ask for their support.
- Tip: Most will not donate in support from just an email or Facebook share. It gives them an awareness. It will take your follow through to ask for a commitment. Whether it's $5, $50 or $500, it doesn't matter. It simply matters that each and every hiker does their best to secure donations of any amount.
- Other donations: cash and checks are also welcome. You may turn those into your team leader with a list of amounts and name and address of person donating so we may provide a tax receipt.
---BOLSTER YOUR SUPPORT REQUESTS---
Many potential supporters will want to see/hear more about the cause. Get their emotional connection and they will want to help, just as you have decided to.
---TEAMS---
- Everyone is part of Team CA, but Team CA is broken into subteams that are joining up to hike.
- It's not required to be a part of a subteam. You're more than welcome to hike and meet at the top by 11am, but if you'd like to join a team, here is a list of current teams. Email the team leader for info:
- Each team shall be responsible for reviewing details of the hiking day with their teams which includes meeting locations and times. If you're not sure what team you're on, contact me at zack.swire@goswire.com
---HIKE---
Trail Options:
- Short Route is 2.5 mi one way = 2.5 hours, 2200 ft elevation gain. (recommended for most, strenuous but doable - equiv to twice up Garcia Trail in Glendora. Utilizes the ski lift)
- Middle Route is 4.5 mi one way = 4 hours, 4K ft elevation gain. (more serious day hikers, this is quite a strenuous hike)
- Long Route is 7 mi one way = 5 hours, 4K ft elevation gain (only serious hikers with proper preparation)
Trail Information:
- San Antonio Hut trail will have the junction marked for the turn off from the fire road to the single track.
- If taking the ski lift (the short route), it's $20 both ways or $12 up and $10 down. MAKE SURE to have funds if you plan to take the ski lift.
Hiking Preparations:
- Carry a minimum of 70 oz of water per person (typical camel back)
- Plan to be self-sufficient: food, good hiking shoes, sunscreen, hat
- Altitude sickness, fatigue, nauseated, etc... turn back, return to lower elevation. - http://www.hikingdude.com/hiking-high-altitude.shtml
Parking and Adventure Pass Requirements:
- Parking at Mt. Baldy Ski Parking Lot is free
- Parking at Manker Flats requires Adventure Pass
- Adventure Pass: You may purchase a pass at Sport Chalet or any Ranger Station, but the Mt. Baldy station will not be open for early starting hikers - it's open from 8am to 4pm. Recommend to get pass before the day of the hike - http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/ap/vendors.php
If Under 18:
- If under 18, need a printed liability form. Email your team leader or zack.swire@goswire.com and we'll send you this form which must be completed prior to the hiking day.
Morning of the Hike, Starting Times:
- Each team will be going different routes. Some teams will split into groups and go multiple routes.
- Talk with your team leader to find out options and starting times.
- For a rough idea, I'd recommend you start no later than the following for the three hiking options in order to reach the Summit by 11am:
- Short Route is 2.5 mi one way = Start by 8AM or earlier if you plan to take a lot of breaks.
- Middle Route is 4.5 mi one way = Start by 6:30AM or earlier for more break time.
- Long Route is 7 mi one way = Start by 5:00AM or earlier for more break time.
---TEAM CA SUMMIT PHOTO - AT THE TOP WITH THE FLAG ---
- We've set 11am as our summit time for all teams under Team CA.
- We'll be carrying the Heart for Africa flag to the top and taking a team photo at 11am.
- Thus, be sure to leave early enough to allow time for breaks in order to summit on time.
- Note: If you encounter issues with your health during the hike, do not push yourself. Ask for assistance and decide if you need to stop, rest, or turn around.
---T-SHIRTS and WRISTBANDS---
- Team Leaders are responsible for picking up t-shirts and wristbands from SWIRE at 440 E Route 66, Glendora. They are available as of Thursday, June 23rd and Friday June 24th.
- Your team leaders will distribute the shirts and wristbands to you. The t-shirts are sport/tech material and are appropriate for the day of the hike.
- If you are hiking without a team, you may pick up your items at SWIRE directly (see address above). If you have questions, please call Zack at 626-641-9198
---PRACTICE HIKE---
- Good local practice hike would be Garcia Trail in Glendora. Twice up Garcia Trail is about equivalent to the 2.5 mile short route for Mt. Baldy.
---CONTACT---
- If you know who your team leader is or have been invited by someone, please contact them first
- I'm also here to answer questions - zack.swire@goswire.com or 626-641-9198
- Please note that there isn't cell reception for much/most of the hiking day, thus, be sure to get everything prepped and answered before the 25th
We've got 1 week to go! We're at 46 hikers and shooting for 100! Invite and find support :)
Let's all give it our best shot to reach our goals!
To the Summit!
Zack Swire, Team SWIRE Lead
Head of Team CA: Wolfgang Buehler
